5 healthy brekkie options

Even though we know it is not good for us we all love a good fried breakfast. Unfortunately they are high in fat, high in cholesterol and with some baked beans thrown in, also high in sugar. As the saying goes, you are what you eat, so if you do not want your heart and your waistline screaming for mercy, here are five alternatives to consider when eating the most important meal of the day.

Now you may be thinking that the first suggestion is muesli but even topped with some natural yogurt it still tastes like you are eating wood shavings. It is time to get creative. Try a salad of rocket and cherry tomatoes. Put on some sliced avocado and indulge yourself by topping it off with some smoked salmon. Now that is a breakfast!

Another great idea is a yogurt and fruit smoothie. These are so easy to make it is criminal. Just whack your chosen fruit or fruits in with the yogurt and blend. Make it the night before and stick it in the refrigerator and you can have an extra ten minutes in bed in the morning.

This idea is also quick and easy and will power you through the morning. Take a couple of slices of wholemeal bread and instead of butter, spread with a soft cheese of your liking. Put sliced tomatoes on the top, a sprinkle of sea salt and some chopped basil. A classic combination of delicious flavors.

If you have already tried the first one there is a chance you have some avocado left over. Take some wholegrain bread and lightly toast it. Mix your avocado into a paste and then spread a thin layer over your toast. Place a nicely poached egg on top of your avocado then a small spoon of hollandaise sauce on top of your poached egg.

Finally of course we have to throw in a fruit salad. This is probably one of the healthiest breakfasts you can eat and is packed with vitamins to keep you healthy. Take any fresh fruits that are in season and throw them all in a bowl. You can jazz it up a bit by adding some natural yogurt if you wish.

So now it is down to you. Are you willing to give up the bacon and fried eggs in the morning and start to power your way to a healthy lifestyle?
